Maxwell Lemuel Roach is an American jazz composer and drummer. A bebop pioneer, he has worked in many other musical styles and is regarded by many as one of the most important drummers in history. He has worked with many famous jazz musicians such as Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Charlie Parker, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Thelonious Monk, Abbey Lincoln, Dinah Washington, Charles Mingus, Billy Eckstine, Stan Getz, Sonny Rollins, Eric Dolphy and Booker Peu. He was inducted into the DownBeat Hall of Fame in 1980 and the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 1992. Roach also co-directed the pioneering quintet with trumpeter Clifford Brown and percussion orchestra M'Boom. He has made numerous musical statements regarding the civil rights movement.
