A MAN has died and a woman is still fighting for her life after a high speed police chase ended in a horror crash on the A50. The driver crashed into another car on the eastbound carriageway in Staffordshire at 6.15am today.

The driver crashed into another car on the eastbound carriageway in Staffordshire at 6.15am today.

Police had called for the man to stop his vehicle, but after he failed to pull over they pursued him along the carriageway.

after trying to evade cops at high speed, the man crashed into another vehicle between Baths Road and Trentham Road, leaving his victims with minor injuries.

The woman who was in the passenger seat of the man's car was taken to hospital and is currently in a critical condition.

Officers have just re-opened the carriageway in both directions, as "investigation are complete", Highways England tweeted.

A spokesperson for Staffordshire Police said: "The vehicle involved in the collision was being pursued by police officers for failing to stop prior to the incident occurring.

"Due to our involvement before the collision, we have voluntarily referred ourselves to the Independent Office for Police Conduct."

A spokesperson for the Independent Office for Police Conduct said: "We were notified by Staffordshire Police about this incident earlier today and have deployed investigators to the scene and the police post-incident procedure to assess the level, if any, of our involvement."

This crash comes days after a 30-year-old man died following a multi-vehicle smash on the A50.

Gurveer Singh Hundal, from Chellaston, was pronounced dead at the scene at around 9pm on April 9.
