Ryan began his professional coaching career as a defensive line coach for the AFL New York Jets for the team's Super Bowl III victory. He became the defensive line coach for the Minnesota Vikings, overseeing the Purple People Eaters. He then became the defense coordinator for the Chicago Bears, which won Super Bowl XX. As the Bears' defensive coordinator, he is credited with being the 46th defense maker, and the team in 1985 led the league in almost every category of defense stats. Ryan then coached the Eagles, served as the Oilers' defense coordinator, and trained the Cardinals. He is the father of NFL coaches Rex Ryan and Rob Ryan.
